MOSCOW — August 14, 2026 — A Moscow court has sentenced Russian citizen Gieorgij Pirogov to 23 years in a high-security penal colony after Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) accused him of cooperating with Polish military intelligence.

According to the FSB, Pirogov, born in 1989, left Russia after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and travelled to Poland. Russian authorities allege that he subsequently made contact with a representative of Polish military intelligence and provided information concerning Russian missile systems and defence production. The FSB also claims he helped identify individuals with access to state secrets. (RMF24)

Russian authorities further allege that Pirogov transferred cryptocurrency to support Ukraine’s armed forces, purchased military equipment and helped organise its shipment from Poland to Ukraine. He was convicted of treason in the form of espionage and providing assistance to a foreign state. The court also imposed a fine of 800,000 rubles. (RMF24)

The allegations have not been independently verified. That distinction is particularly important given the information environment surrounding Russia’s war against Ukraine. A Sign of the Expanding Hybrid Battlefield

The case illustrates how the conflict between Russia and the West increasingly extends beyond conventional military operations. Intelligence collection, recruitment, sanctions evasion, financial networks, military supply chains and information operations all form part of a broader hybrid warfare environment in which governments seek to exploit vulnerabilities well outside the traditional battlefield.

For Poland and other NATO states bordering Russia and Belarus, the alleged case also highlights the growing importance of counterintelligence. Russian security services are increasingly portraying contacts between Russian citizens and Western institutions as evidence of hostile foreign activity. At the same time, publicising such arrests and lengthy sentences can serve a second purpose: deterrence and information warfare, warning potential sources while reinforcing the Kremlin’s narrative that Russia is under sustained attack from Western intelligence services.

Whether every element of the FSB’s account is accurate remains unclear. What is clear is that espionage, influence operations, covert financing and information warfare are becoming increasingly intertwined with the wider conflict — making the boundary between conventional war and hybrid warfare increasingly difficult to define.
